Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris France to British parents Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson who were both lawyers. When she was just five years old when she left for Oxfordshire and enrolled in an Oxfordshire-based Dragon School. Emma had a dream to become a professional actor from the age of aged six. She was enrolled at Stagecoach Theatre Arts in Oxford, an acting institute which offers classes for part-time students. By the time she turned 10, Emma had taken part in a variety of Stagecoach plays and productions. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, the 2001 film version of J.K. Rowling's bestselling book was cast in 1999. Emma was discovered by casting agents through Emma's Oxford theatre teacher. David Heyman, the producer of Harry Potter Harry Potter's Sorcerer's Stone and Ron Weasley told Emma after eight auditions that she had been picked for these parts. She was cast alongside Daniel Radcliffe Rupert Grint and Rupert Grint. Emma's film debut was made with the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2002). The film beat all previous records in terms of its opening and weekend ticket numbers, and was the most-recorded 2001 movie. The film was praised by critics who praised the film, particularly the young performers. The Daily Telegraph praised Emma for her outstanding performance. Emma was awarded five nominations for her outstanding performance. Later, she won the Young Artist Award in Leading Young Actress of an Film.
